For my research project, I want to explore how the Internet has revolutionized musical collaboration. There are several websites that allow users to create complete musical compositions without ever meeting in person. For example, one person can upload a guitar riff. Another person can organize lyrics and song structure around that riff. Someone else can compose a bassline or string orchestration, and someone else can add a drum track. What started as a three-second guitar riff can result in a legitimate, collaborative piece of music. Using digital communication to piece together music isn't just theoretical technology or a novelty, it's already widely used by both major-label artists as well as avid GarageBand musicians.
The technology is in place, and there is no shortage of musical talent among contributors. However, what role does authorship play? How is credit given for music created in this fashion, and is there away for the contributors to profit from it? Finally, what advantages and disadvantages does the online format bring to the collaborative process, as opposed to musicians meeting in person?

This seems like a very interesting topic. It draw upon an entirely new method of multimedia expression and creativity. One question you might want to consider, since it is a collaboration, who (if anyone) gets credit if the song is published?
ReplyDeleteThe topic that you are honing in is a good one. Give examples of the kind of websites that you are thinking of and maybe outside articles too that relate to the issue you are trying to address.
ReplyDeleteI think you have selected a strong topic. It seems like there will be a lot of information and many online sources that you can explore in order to gather data. Make sure that you identify your research questions in your proposal. What are you going to focus on specifically?
ReplyDeleteHi Whit! I think this such an original proposal/project to do research on and I am very excited to see how it unfolds. Many people are concerned about researching the newest things like Twitter and FanFiction, but these types of musical collaborations have been going on for some time now and I think it would be great to see the role that authorship plays. Are you going to focus on any genre of music in particular or a variety of genres that shows how different artists with different styles can use music that is different from their own? Great idea!!!
ReplyDeleteThis is a really interesting topic. It really touches upon how the internet has changed how people create, especially with music. It sort of makes me wonder exactly who would be considered the true "owner" of the music as a whole, or if it even matters at the end of the collaboration.
ReplyDeleteThis seems like a great topic to research. These types of websites have many authors and I think this will work well with this class.
